Eve Online Mining Techniques

I recently purchased an Osprey Cruiser. It has 3 turret slots and a drone bay that allows for four mining drones.

I've adopted the "jetcan" technique. (See: http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Haladas_Mining_Guide#The_Basic_M...)

Basically I jettison what I mine into space which goes into a container that I can rename and add more ore to. Once this is full (or ~90 minutes is up) I return to the station I'm in and hop in my small freighter and retrieve the jettison cans.

This allows me to mine much faster. In an hour of time, I can retrieve at least two full loads of ore for my freighter. If I were to mine with my freighter, it would take 90 minutes to acquire a full load.

This does have risks, though. Another player could swing by and steal the contents of my jetcan. However, it does not come without consequences. Such a thief would be marked as hostile to myself and all corporation members. While I'd more than likely be in a mining ship, incapable of attacking a thief, the threat of retaliation via any corporation I might be in is usually enough to deter the thief.

This risk can be entirely averted by only mining from asteriods that have to be accessed by the use of acceleration gates. These asteriod fields are in rooms that are only accessable to players that have that mission.

This opens a potential new strategy - have a buddy in a freighter wait nearby and fill his cargo hold as I jettison ore. This vastly reduces the risks of someone stealing ore as it is picked up as soon as it is jettisonned.

To expand upon this further, a few mining barges with strip mining modules could very quickly acquire ore and leave jetcans and be followed by a huge freighter to quickly strip mine an entire asteriod field. Something I'd like to organize some day.
