Transitioning into Combat Roles in Eve Online

I've been mining in Eve Online and hauling in a minor role for more than a month now. While this afforded me plenty of idle time that I spent reading up on the game while I waited for my mining lasers to cut up a rock or autopilot to guide me through many systems to drop off some items on a courier contract, it also gave me time to train on the base and core skills that make the difference between a new pilot and a better pilot.

I've now begun training into skills that will make me capable of flying a logistics ship in combat. I plan on focusing first on self defense via the use of drones, long range weaponry, and armor tanking and secondly on remote armor repairing. I have already trained a bit in drones, although only for the use of scout drones, for use in protecting my mining barge as I sat motionless in space, churning up space rocks, so I have a bit of a jump start on that field.

I've put together a plan for this new leg in my Eve career using the lovely 3rd party character planning/analysis tool called EveMon. The plan is currently going to take me 147 days and a few hours to complete. It includes learning skills, suggested by EveMon, that aim to decrease the total time spent on training the plan by nearly 3 weeks. After that, I will train up to use my first drone boat and logistics cruiser, the Vexor. Then I'll buff up my drone skills a bit to make them worth a fight. After that, I train on core skills - skills that increase my capacitor output, ship speed and agility, and basically any skill that will help boost the abilities required to pilot any type of ship throughout New Eden. Once that is completed, I'll finish buffing my drone skills out to the realistic max. Once that is complete, I move on to training to fly the Myrmidon, a droneboat/battle cruiser. After that I work on finalizing my drone, combat, and core systems training followed by some finalized training for logistics such as remote armor repair systems, shield emissions systems, and energy transfer systems.

It's going to be a long, but rewarding road.
